Henry Ford Health System has been a top healthcare provider throughout its more than 100-year commitment to Detroit and its surrounding communities. HFHS has teamed with AECOM to invest in the expansion of its Macomb Hospital Campus to further embrace the needs of the community. Located in Clinton Township, Michigan, on the east side’s first hospital, circa 1899, the new 225,000-square-foot, five-story North Tower addition will house 160 private, single-bed patient rooms.
Design Parti: Embrace
The patient care tower will embrace the community by aligning with the overarching mission and vision, as well as the three critical areas of quality improvement — patient experience, care team, and supportive operations staff — that were established using the 4D process (define, discover, design, and do). This systemic approach is used to outline success and envision the ideal care delivery model. Upon arrival to the campus, the community will be greeted by regional contexture and cultural influences that will have a vocabulary that expresses the HFHS Macomb Hospital brand direction and the
community’s local fare.
The exterior and interior architecture will help facilitate a nurturing patient experience by clearly defining the patient journey through the use of form, texture, materiality, and technology to offer hospitality with stress-relieving cues for intuitive wayfinding, uplifting art, and diversion for the senses with daylighting and views to nature. The design will enable caregivers to provide optimal patient care. The flexible and universal clinical planning model will allow for seamless caregiver-to-caregiver collaboration and clear views to patients, accommodate future advancements in healthcare delivery systems, maximize space, and improve operational efficiency.
